Hi Evi
Thanks for the recipe of ketupat sayur.
No we don't have sago flour here, we have sago pearls i.e. sago flour
which has been turned into pearls.
I have tried chinese shops, they have none.
There isn't any Indonesian shop here :-)
There used to be an Indonesian food takeaway shop where you could buy
pempek but the shop closed down a few months ago.
Of course I can still speak and write in Indonesian, it's my first
language you will never be able to forget it, the only thing that I
won't be able to speak is the slang :-)
Thanks anyway.

Dear Evi,
I was very much impressed by your web site. I came at your site, because I try to get into contact with the Bandung Institute of Technology.
The reason is that I have some historically interesting papers about the start of the "Koninklijk Instituut voor Hooger Technisch Onderwijs in Ned.Indie". These are coming from my grandfather ir P.A. Roelofsen who was a high ranking gouvernmental official in the days when the Institute was founded around 1918. In my possession I have the drawings of the first buildings, financial papers, etc. These papers (mainly in Dutch) and drawings might be of interest for the present institute.
Could you help in finding a person who might be interested?
Hope to hear of you soon.

Hello Evi,
Came across your web page while looking around for information about Indonesia. Why? Well, I recently bought a music CD from Amazon.com titled "The Sound of Sunda" originally recorded in 1989 with the title "Asa Tos Tepang". The music was recorded at the Jugala studios in Bandung with singers Euis Komariah and Yus Wiradiredja. I think this degung music is very beautiful. Reminds me of the folk songs I used to collect back in the 1960's.
Do you have time for an occasional e-mail? I would like to know a little more about
your part of the world.

Hello Evi!
You must be wondering how I got ur email address and why am I writing u, right?
Lemme start from the very beginning...
I was trying to search for someone named Jimmy , he was an old grade school friend of mine. I am now in the Philippines, working as a government employee. I was born and raised in Indonesia and spent my primary and secondary school years in Sanana, Maluku Utara. So naturally, I do speak and write in Bahasa Indonesia too :)
Well, so I entered Jimmy Wimenta on Google search and your personal website came out. I realized your site must have been written couple of years ago, but just in case you get this email and if the Jimmy Wimenta you mentioned in your journal is the same Jimmy Wimenta who spent grade school in SD Naskat Sanana, Indonesia, and if you still have communications with him, can you please tell him I've been looking up his email, maybe we can email each other, I just want to know what happened after we left Sanana in February of 1987. Jimmy was a year younger than me, if my memory serves me right so he must be around 24 yrs old right now. My name is Christina S. Pelayo ..forgot to tell u that :)) my friends call me Nona and I'm 25 yrs old now.
Evi, if you can please do me the favor of getting me his email address, I would forever be indebted to you :). I dunno what came over me but I suddenly feel so nostalgic, I've been wondering waht hapenned to my old school friends in Indonesia.
I'm in the office and I have to go back to work now so TTFN and I hope to hear from you soon.
BTW, how are you now? what happened to all your plans (sorry if you think I'm getting too personal but I read all those stuff in your website..hehehe..)
Have a nice day Evi!

Evi--You are sooo good. So sweet to have remembered me when you
returned to Sungai Gerong. Thank you so much for the photos. I love them. I
know that spot on the corner near the jagar hut. We used to always walk along
and balance on that yellow and black pipe facing the river.
Did you spend much time in Sungai Gerong while you were in the area?
I lived at 827 Jalan Macan. It was a house on the corner facing what
we used to call the stink house-- a little blue sewer pump house, I think. I
would like so much to return.
How difficult do you think it would be to enter the complex as a
foreigner?
Do you have any idea who I could write to receive permission?
Thank you again, Evi. I hope we can stay in touch.

Hi there,
I was just surfing the net looking for some Indonesian recipes and
found your web site. I liked it because it has PICTURES!
Recipes always look better with pictures, I think.
Anyway, thanks for posting them. I'm Indonesian myself,

living in Toronto, Canada. It's so weird when you're describing your
childhood, since we're the same age, I remembered liking NKOTB and
Tommy Page too, just before I moved to Canada. I'm married now to
a Canadian guy and have a 1 yr old boy, so I'm stuck over here :)
Anyway, just to say thanks for the recipes. Any chance you have a
good recipe for Martabak Manis/Bangka? I miss that sooo much. I
remembered going with my Dad to buy them for late-night snacking.
Please forward them to me if you do, okay?

Dear Evi:
What a wonderful and informative trip through your
personal history. It was enlightening to learn how
life is now in Indonesia compared to how it was when
I was a young boy of 10-12 so many years ago.When I
lived in Sumatra everyone wanted to go to Bali for
holiday or to Bandung to get relief from the heat.
I didn't understand that then because heat and beauty
are not problems for a 12 year old. I just remember
happy times and soaking up the culture like a sponge.
I often surf the web for Indonesian sites and can spend
hours traveling the winding pathways the net takes one
to. It's like going deeper and deeper into the utan.
That's how I found your site - honestly can't remember
the route that got me here but I'm glad I found it!
By now you have matured a bit since building the site
- I suspect work and career has taken its toll. Keep up
the positive view of life and good luck on your journey
to your place in the future. Salamat Jalan.
Sincerely,
Art
